OK. I know some hardcore gamers hate the strategy guides because it robs the gamers of the discovery.
But I think that there are some guides that actually make the game more fun to play and I thought I would start with some my favorites and a few that I didn't like as much or thought they were OK guides.
Final Fantasy VII from Brady Games
This is my one of the best guides ever published IMHO.
The layout and maps are easy to understand and they tried to minimized the spoilers. There are a few problems with it however; namely with the Emerald and Ruby Weapons battle namely they don't give you enough info on how to beat these very tough monsters other than basics for Emerald and give very little for the Ruby.
But still a guide that is well worth it's price. 4.5 out 5
Final Fantasy VIII from Brady Games
A slight step down from VII's guide but still worth it's value up until the final boss then lets you down. A 3 out of 5
Final Fantasy 9 from Brady Games
This book in one word: sucks. The problem was that someone thought having a book with a bunch of codes that you could type into Square's website to give you vital info was a good idea. It wasn't a good idea for a PS 1 game with absolutely no online game play. This idea might have worked better for FF 11 but not for FF9 sadly this guide is worthless and to add insult to injury Square took the down website down years ago. A 0 out of 5.
Final Fantasy X from Brady Games
A major improvement over FF9's guide (which was a waste of trees) it has a nice layout and good maps to help it out but sort of fails to tells much about the final bosses you have to fight. A 3 out of 5.
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete from Working Designs
What could ve been a truly great book is hampered by low grade humor and and way too many spoilers in the form of anime checklists (that are essential the anime scripts) The maps are excellent and while print is very small and the layout is average. There's also Lunar 1 memory card stickers in it as well. It's a good book if you can find it. A 2.5 out of 5.
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete from Working Designs
This is a harccover and while there some of the same problems as there are in the first one, but there are a lot of improvements though: bigger print, a slightly better layout and 3 bound in ribbon bookmarks. But again the anime checklists ruin the story of the game and low grade humor is even worse. Both Lunar books have retro-checks comparing the differences of the Sega CD versions and the PS 1 versions and interviews with the game makers that aren't always in the best places. In the Lunar 2 book there's a manga parody strip that and Lunar 2 memory card stickers is in the book as well. Extremely hard to find even when new.
A 2.5 out of 5.
Final Fantasy XII from Brady Games
A guide book that comes the closest to beating FF VII for the best but is hampered by small print for the bounty hunts and doesn't tell you how to beat them. Not a bad guide at all. A deluxe version that includes a folder/dust jacket with variant covers of the main party
characters and an art book is also available but is becoming harder to find. A 4 out of 5.
Edit: What I mean by layout is how the pages and the info is given.
