So I finally bought Batman: Ninja on digital and that movie...bonkers. I mean I liked it but it's totally bat-crap nuts. The plot is this: Gorilla Grodd has built a time machine he calls a Quake Engine and is showing it off in Arkham Asylum to the Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, The Penguin, Deathstroke, and Poison Ivy, this of course gets the attention of Batman, Catwoman, Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Red Hood, and Alfred the device gets turn on and they all get sent back through time to feudal Japan and because Batman was trying to stay out of the way the blast he gets sent two years later after everybody else is sent back only to find that the villains have taken over various parts of Japan and building specialized castles and each have a power cell of the Quake Engine. Catwoman finds Batman after he takes out some samurai with masks like the Joker's face and takes him to Alfred who has kept the Batmobile safe and ready to go so Batman decides to take on Joker and Harley Quinn. His plan backfires when Joker's castle has two robotic arms and crushes the car then Batman ejects part of it and it turns into the Batwing then that gets destroyed and Batman turns into the Bat cycle and when he finally has Joker dead to rights he turns the castle's arms to squash a woman and her baby and so Batman turns the Batcycle into a mecha suit and tries to save the woman only the woman is Harley and she hits Batman with her mallet and Batman ejects from the armor and is saved by Nightwing, Red Robin and a clan of Bat Ninjas.
Back at the Bat Clan's HQ Batman learns that there is a prophecy, Red Hood is off on a recon mission checking on the other villains and Robin has a pet monkey. He gets a message in English from Grodd and goes off to talk to him Grodd wants to go back to the 21st Century but he needs help to go against the other villains and Batman agrees and they ambush the Joker on a boat, while Catwoman fights Harley and steals the Joker's power cell, after the Joker and Harley are defeated Grodd and Catwoman double-cross Batman and company. Catwoman just wants to go home but Grodd has other plans.
Joker and Harley escape in the confusion. Back at the Bat Clan's HQ Batman realizes that he has no technology and only his left his mind, spirit, and his sidekicks, and finally becomes the ninja he was destined to become. Red Hood finds Joker and Harley living as farmers and tries to kill them of course Batman stops him and says that he knows the Joker as changed for some weird reason and tells Red Hood to leave them alone after they leave Harley and the Joker are excited that they have their first plant growing and this restores their insanity. Grodd uses his telepathic powers to have the other villains battle him on the "Field of Hell" and they each have a castle that moves. Batman and company learns this and attacks and this is where the film goes EPIC BONKERS. Lets just say this battle involves giant mecha and a giant monkey and then the bats swarm around the giant monkey and turn into a
This film is nuts but I liked it although it I did think it had too many villains and sidekicks (Grodd, The Joker, Harley, Catwoman, Nightwing, Alfred, and Robin get most the screen time) and it's nice to see Batman so used to using his technology being put into a situation where the technology is basically destroyed and he struggles without it's use. Batman also gets his butt kicked a lot in this one. The character designs are good (Red Hood sucks though) and the action is well done, although the scene with Batman and Red Hood dealing with farmer Joker and Harley is done in a Japanese scroll style that some people may find weird. The mecha stuff is fine but I can't help but wonder if it's a comment on mecha in anime. This movie is fast paced for the most part and there are some plot holes and anime touches that might annoy some fans.
If you are tied of the look the current DC Animated movies and like anime then this might be the film for you but if you're not a fan of anime you might want to skip it.
I give it 3 out of 5.
