I saw I THINK it was a Cultholic or Whatculture Wrestling YouTube video about the biggest problem with pro wrestling across the board but namely WWE, AEW/ROH, Impact, and NJPW which is there might be too much wrestling on TV and some wrestlers, bookers/writers, personalities connected to wrestling, and fans are suffering from burnout from to many too many shows and trying to keep up with the various wrestlers and angles can lean to burnout from wrestling and that burnout can also affect sponsors who seeing Impact Wrestling struggling to survive against those listed above but also having other "smaller" promotions with streaming like NWA, OVW, MLW, and others that get their shows on YouTube and/or Twitch.
And so yeah it's hard to stand out from the pack.
I mean is Impact old school style, is it high-flying, is it hardcore, is it comedy, the problem it's tried all these different styles and never has stuck with any of them instead trying to be all of them at the same time and I'm sorry but pick a style and stick with. I would love to see a more old school serious style (think Mid-South Wrestling) with storylines/angles that were serious and made sense with a clear heel and babyface fighting for titles, title shots, or personal grudges that didn't involve demons from another dimension and fight scenes in hell and shit like teleporting Matt Hardy. If I want that I can watch plenty of sci-fi/fantasy/superhero shows for that.
Now yes, you can have the high-flying X-Division, a brutal street fight to settle a grudge, and a classic technical wrestling match for the World title all on the same show, but about a serious show that doesn't have goofy angles about a woman who thinks she's a demon from another dimension battling another woman who thinks she is a zombie bride from hell fighting with swords and daggers in hell (and they have done this) or shit like when the Hardy Boys were teleporting around.
When I booked X-WCW I knew it was a hardcore show and so yeah I used a lot of gimmick matches some I made up like Hell's Chamber but here is the thing while we did have the occasional funny match or spot like the medal being thrown into the crowd was my idea because D-Extreme wanted to do a 19 man elimination match, the reason I put the medal there was to have a way he could end the match without having figure out how to do 19 pins or submissions. I tried to keep it within the scope of reality of what one could see in WWE, Impact (then called TNA), and ROH. I used some old WCW matches like the Triple Cage and War Games and while X-WCW was once compared unfairly to ECW (which for the record as of June 22, 2022 I have never seen a complete ECW match or show of the original or reboot version). I kept my stories simple if the heel had the World title then a babyface would have win a title shot and the heel would make the babyface's life a living hell up to the match in which one would win and the other would win. Sometimes it would be to settle who was the best like when my character fought D-Exteme's character in 2 out 3 falls match maybe there was a title shot on the line but that was secondary for my character the heel to beat D-Extreme the babyface.
Now from I hear about WWE, AEW/ROH, NJPW, and Impact I'm glad I'm not watching any of it.
WWE is boring.
AEW/ROH is stupid.
Impact is a just a pit stop for wrestlers who want to be in WWE or AEW/ROH to work for a year or two before sighing with a bigger company.
So yeah I'm burned out on wrestling I haven't watched a wrestling match from anybody in YEARS now I listen to Jim Cornette's podcasts because he's funny and I like listening to him tell stories from his time as a manger of the Midnight Express and the Heavenly Bodies and how he ran his companies Smokey Mountain Wrestling and Ohio Valley Wrestling. I like talking about the stuff in WCW, Impact, WWE, and ROH (before Tony Khan bought it) that I loved and how some of it inspired me when I was booking and writing X-WCW. If I had to choose between the new episode of any wrestling company or Star Trek: Strange New Worlds I'm going with the latter because that is fun and exciting for me to watch the wrestling isn't something that I feel like could enjoy even if it's a serious old school style of wrestling. I'm getting like that with a lot of the media I consume comic books, Transformers toys, even video games. Some of it's I'm getting older and it's harder for me to keep up with all that stuff and some of those new comic books, Transformers toys, and video games aren't being made for people like me in mind it's for younger people and I have no problem with that. Besides I got enough VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, comics books, Transformer toys, and video games to me last time for a very long time and the you add on the various streaming services that I subscribe too, so I'm not hard for entertainment that does appeal to me.
Now I'll still have my memories of WCW and Impact the good, the bad, the average, and the great and I will always be proud of the X-WCW. But remember you fall in love with someone and/or something but you can also fall out of love with someone and/or something too. Maybe one day I'll return to watching a pro-wrestling promotion again regularly or maybe not, but I'm still grateful for watching it. I just wish I could watch it now and enjoy it.
